Newman Catholic College offers a comprehensive Senior Pathways and Training program designed to support students pursuing vocational education and training (VET). Located within the James Cook University Cairns campus, the College provides unique pathways that combine senior studies with practical skills, industry experience and nationally recognised qualifications.
Students can access certificate courses, school-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATs), work experience opportunities and specialist trade training facilities. These pathways help prepare students for employment, further training or university while they complete their secondary education.
In-College Vocational Education and Training
VET qualifications can be incorporated into a student’s regular timetable. These courses contribute towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and focus on hands-on, practical capabilities:
- Certificate Courses: Nationally recognised qualifications ranging from Certificate II through to diploma level.
- On-Campus VET Certificates Across Diverse Industries: Students can complete a range of certificate courses designed to develop practical, industry-relevant skills alongside their senior studies. Options include hospitality, engineering, construction, fitness and health services.
Pathways and Training Support
- School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SATs): Students can combine paid work, on-the-job training, and college studies to earn credits toward their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).
- External Partnerships: The College works with external training organisations and industry partners to expand the range of practical course options available to our senior students.
- Pathways and Training Coordinator: Our Pathways and Training Coordinator, together with our academic advisors and mentors, provides individual guidance to help students identify their goals and align their studies and training with regional employment opportunities.
